The tradition of sending greeting cards dates back all the way to 1846 when British businessman Henry Cole requested a printer to produce a printed Christmas greeting card he could send on to his friends. The idea took off and by the 1860s, Christmas cards were mass produced.
Greeting cards can be sent for many occasions including: birthdays, valentines, with sympathy, thank you, congratulations, Christmas, invitations or even just to say hello!
The UK love sending greeting cards and it’s been reported that 2 billion of them are purchased each year, making the UK the country with the most successful greeting card industry in the entire world.
Today flat and folded cards mean the same thing, but they didn’t always. Formerly flat cards were also known as correspondence cards and were only for men, whereas folded were just for women.
Birthdays are the most popular reason to send a greeting card by far, which is followed by sympathy and thank you cards.
